role. \nFailure of standard cancer\n therapies has dramatic effects on the health and quality of life of \ncancer patients and their families, both physically and emotionally. \nAlthough many of the current available anti-cancer therapeutic \napproaches may have significant results, they still may\n fail if cancer is not detected early and diagnosed appropriately. \nTherefore, from a societal point of view the benefit from the \ndevelopment of novel diagnostic tools\/biomarkers for early cancer \ndiagnosis can improve the efficacy of standard cancer therapies,\n leading to the desired outcome of prolonged disease-free survival. \nWorld Health Organization (WHO) launched the Global Action Plan for the \nPrevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases that aims to reduce \nby 25% premature mortality from cancer and other\n diseases (e.g. cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and chronic \nrespiratory) by 2025<\/span><a title=\"\"><span style=\"vertical-align:super\"><span><span><span style=\"vertical-align:super\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:&quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif\">[1]<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Arial Narrow&quot;,sans-serif\">.\n Cancer rates are set to increase at an alarming rate globally and \nimmediately actions should be taken. According to the WHO, among the \nareas where actions can make a difference to controlling cancer is the \nearly detection so as to help treatment and palliative\n care. However, these techniques have\n not been combined. BioNanoTec aims to develop a novel user-friendly \nsoftware for cancer diagnosis based on microscopy characterization of \ncells. BioNanoTec will combine AI and machine learning techniques for \ncancer diagnosis based on optical microscopy images\n and AFM nanomechanical characterization of the cells. This will enable \novercoming the limitation of using data from only one technique (e.g., \nonly nanomechanical characterization with AFM).\n<b><u>Problem that the Host Organization faces<\/u><\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Arial Narrow&quot;,sans-serif\">:\n BioNanoTec members\n have a great experience on AFM characterization and have started \ndeveloping the software using data from AFM nanomechanical \ncharacterization of different cell lines. The preliminary data are very \nencouraging and promising. Furthermore, they have developed\n a new technique for 3D AFM characterization of the cells and have \nobtained funding from Cyprus Research and Innovation (CONCEPT\/0521\/0069)\n that will help the development of the relevant technique. However, \nBioNanoTec have no access to optical microscopy images.\n A small number of figures that have been obtained are not appropriate \nfor the development, training and testing of the software under \ndevelopment. BioNanoTech need a dataset with images and information from\n cells (of different cancer types) that will correlate\n their invasive properties with their morphological features. <u><\/u>\n&nbsp;<u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<b><u><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:&quot;Arial Narrow&quot;,sans-serif\">Solution\n through the Innovation Voucher<\/span><\/u><\/b><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:&quot;Arial Narrow&quot;,sans-serif\">:\n This project will enable the HO collaborate with <\/span><b><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:&quot;Arial Narrow&quot;,sans-serif\">E.U.C.\n Research Centre Ltd. (EUC-RC)<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;line-height:150%;font-family:&quot;Arial Narrow&quot;,sans-serif\">\n the Knowledge Intensive Organization. EUC RC will performed experiments\n so as to create an appropriate dataset that the HO needs for the \ndevelopment of the AI-based software for cancer diagnosis. The dataset \nwill include optical\/fluorescence microscopy images\n and single cell information. This information will correlate the \ninvasive properties of the cells with their morphological \ncharacteristics, including cell\u2019s shape and cytoskeleton characteristics\n (e.g., F-actin fibers content and orientation). The dataset\n will be used in a future step from the HO for both training the AI code\n and also testing it. The Innovation Voucher offers mutual benefits for \nboth the organizations. The research results from this project will be \nused not only for developing the software\n but also for future research proposals.
